We have a diversity of scholarship opportunities for you and your situation. From recognition of academic achievements or musical performance, to support for unique challenges and experiences, all current and recently graduated students are encouraged to explore the list.
SECONDARY STUDENTS
Lindsay Fox Scholarship
A $3,000 per annum scholarship awarded annually to a commencing Year 9 student experiencing severe financial need. The scholarship is accessed as a credit against the costs of school charges, books, uniforms and other school requisites. Applications close 20th May 2024.
Susan Fincham Young Carer Bursary
Are you a student who has a carer role with an immediate family member? This bursary may be able to help your family situation.
Applications close 20 May 2024.
PCDL Scholarship
A $2,000 per annum scholarship awarded annually to a commencing Year 9 student to support costs of their education at Melbourne High School. Applications close 20th May 2024.
Chris McGrath Scholarship
Awarded annually to Year 9 boy – $1000 per annum to Year 12 inclusive (Total Prize $4000). Applicants experiencing financial hardship, who are interested in Cadets should apply. Applications close 20th May 2024.
Mark Ranasinghe Research Scholarship
A $500 scholarship awarded to 2 students undertaking Extended Investigation at a VCE level – Units 1-4. The students must demonstrate a strong interest and talent for pursuing research at a university level in the future. Successful recipients will engage in a mentoring program over the year towards conceiving, developing and executing a research project to a publication standard. The scholarship aims to promote research interest in high-achieving students, cultivate scientific leadership skills, and increase recipients’ competitiveness for university-level applications.
END OF YEAR ASSEMBLIES
Lachlan Caspar Brooke Endowment Fund
A $1,500 endowment awarded at the Committee’s discretion to a Year 9, 10 or 11 student experiencing financial and/or other hardship. Students must have a satisfactory academic performance, overall involvement in the School program and appreciation of the values of the School. A solid record of good behaviour and support for others is also a prerequisite.
The John Hart Bursary
A $500 prize awarded to two Year 11 students studying visual and performing arts. Applicants must clearly outline their engagement with the arts and a referee is required who can validate and support their application.
The Peter Larsen Music Bursary
A bursary awarded to a member or members of the Melbourne High School Orchestra experiencing financial need, as recommended by the Director of Music.
Ian Douglas Hills Memorial Language Exchange Award
In memory of Ian Douglas Hills who attended Melbourne High School from 2003 to 2006 and excelled in German language studies. A $1500 prize awarded to a Year 10 or Year 11 student to offset costs relating to the Language Exchange Tour. Language must be studied to Year 12.
John Beaton Scholarship
A $500 scholarship awarded to a Year 11 student, given annually over two years, in Year 11 and Year 12, for the purchase of books. John Beaton embodied personal and intellectual qualities which Melbourne High School aspires to instill in all its students. The prize seeks to encourage the development of both scientific and artistic skills.
Marius Bannister Award
A $100 prize awarded to a Year 10 student who is recognised for all-around involvement in the life of the School, satisfactory academic progress, support of peers, a commitment to the ethos of the School and compliance with the School’s Code of Behaviour.
Empathy, Compassion and Emotional Awareness Award
A $150 award recognising a Year 10 and Year 11 student. The award is for students who demonstrate the ability to experience and relate to the thoughts, emotions and experiences of others. A student who can step into someone else’s shoes, respect their feelings and understand their needs.
George Camakaris Library Resources Scholarship
A $300 book voucher awarded to three Year 9, three Year 10, and three Year 11 students for satisfactory academic performance, overall involvement in the school program and a solid record of good behaviour and support for others. Consideration of financial and/or other hardship will be given in the allocation of this prize.
The Roderick MacDonald Bursary
Three bursaries of $1000 awarded to Year 9 students who demonstrate financial need, a solid record of good behaviour, support for others and strength in mathematics and science.
James Guthrie Year 11 Prize/ The Caltex All-rounder Medal
A $500 prize awarded to a Year 11 student who demonstrates outstanding academic ability – top 10% of students for that year. Other criteria includes: a commitment to the ethos of the school; compliance with the School’s Code of Behaviour; contributing willingly and generously in a broad range of activities such as music, sport and other areas; leadership; commitment; unselfish contribution; sense of pride in the School.
Business Enterprise Award
A $200 prize awarded to a Year 11 student undertaking commerce subjects and who shows initiative in business management and business enterprise. The award is given in consultation with the class teacher.
Bluey Truscott Scholarship
A $1,000 scholarship and medallion awarded to two Year 10 students – $500 in Year 10 and Year 11. Funded and administered by MHSOBA, the scholarship recognises leadership history and potential. Recipients also demonstrated academic endeavour, sporting involvement, and co-curricular participation. Short-listed applicants must attend a selection panel interview. Applications close 11th September 2024
MHS Council Year 11 Dux Prize
A $500 prize awarded to the highest scoring Year 11 student.
Jared and Jesse Heath Scholarship
A $500 scholarship will be awarded to Year 10 or Year 11 students experiencing financial hardship. The funds are for the purchase of textbooks. Evidence of commitment to the School ethos is a prerequisite. Students must have parents who have evidence of a Commonwealth Health Care Card or a Pension Card, or who qualify for income support benefits or have a temporary protection visa.
Grigsby Family Performing Arts Award
A $400 prize awarded to either a Year 10 or Year 11 student who demonstrates excellence in a particular area or areas of performance, satisfactory attendance, a good academic record and a satisfactory record of behaviour. This award will be decided by a panel.
Harry Tredinnick Gift
A $500 prize awarded to a Year 10 student who is recognised for both active participation in the life of the School, particularly in one or two areas and quiet achievement and support of fellow students and staff. The recipient will also demonstrate consistent academic achievement and a commitment to the ethos of the School.
Politics Prize
A $150 prize awarded to a Year 11 student studying politics. This award will be given in consultation with a politics teacher.
Simon Bergman Memorial Scholarship
A gift of Fred and Leah Bergman in memory of Simon. A $4000 ($2000 in Year 10 and $1000 in Year 11 & Year 12) scholarship awarded to a Year 9 student demonstrating an affinity with the School and its ethos, excellent academic progress and involvement in the wider curriculum. Applicants should be forthright, imaginative, confident, motivated, well organised and energetic members of their class. Recipients are not eligible for other scholarships in their remaining years at the School. This scholarship will offset overall educational expenses.
George F. Langley Citizenship Award and Higgins Medal
A $500 scholarship, engraved watch and medal awarded to a Year 11 student who demonstrates satisfactory academic performance, overall involvement in the School program and appreciation of school values. The recipient will also display unselfish care for their fellow students and outstanding service to the School and general community. Financial and/or other hardship will be considered.
The Kaushal Srivastava Family Prize for Science Achievement
A $500 prize for a student in Year 11 with exemplary commitment and attitude to studying physics and scientific inquiry. This award was established in 2024 as an 80th birthday tribute to Professor Kaushal Srivastava, the grandfather of the 2024 school captain Rohan Green. A distinguished physicist with a remarkable career spanning four continents, Professor Srivastava’s passion for teaching and research helped countless students thrive in science and progress society. He also made significant contributions to multicultural harmony in Australia through community engagement and works of literature. MHS will select this prize winner.
SCHOLARSHIPS – TERTIARY
There are more awards/scholarships that are managed by the Melbourne High School Old Boys Association.
Awards / Scholarships are available for current students at MHS and past students that have completed VCE and are starting Tertiary studies.
